Falaise d’Aval access: closed caves, permitted viewpoints and safety

Can you walk through Trou à l’Homme?
No. Normandie Tourisme states that the Trou à l’Homme cave and tunnel are closed. Chambre des Demoiselles, Descente au Chaudron and tunnels through the headlands are also prohibited. An old photograph or route description is not evidence that a passage is open.
Which part of the beach can you visit?
The published municipal rule prohibits access along the town’s beaches except the area directly in front of the seafront promenade. Stay in that permitted area and respect barriers. Do not try to reach the arch or Jambourg beach along the cliff foot.
Where should you look at the cliffs?
Facing the sea from Étretat’s seafront, Aval is on the left and Amont on the right. Start with the seafront view if you want to avoid a climb. For an elevated view, follow only permitted marked paths. The Étretat Gardens also offer a view of the Needle, subject to their own admission conditions.
Why stay back from the edge in good weather?
Erosion causes rockfalls. The published rules require at least five metres from the break of slope on upper cliff plateaus. That distance never overrides a fence or local closure. Do not cross protective barriers to take a photograph.
What should you check before visiting?
Read tourist-office access updates and the weather forecast, then check signs when you arrive. Wear shoes with grip and bring a windproof layer. If a path is closed or conditions are poor, use the permitted seafront area. A tide calculation or a one-hour or four-hour return margin cannot make a prohibited area accessible.
Help protect the coast
Leave pebbles where they are: they help protect the shoreline. Take litter away and stay on permitted paths. Protective equipment on Aval also helps fragile areas recover.
